European Style Papermaking
Weekend class, Sat. July20th 10-4 and Sun. July 21st, 1-4pm 2024, at Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Learn the tools, terminology, and procedures of European-style papermaking in this in-person studio workshop. Participants will be guided through fiber preparation, the process of using moulds and deckles to form sheets, and techniques for pressing and drying. Our focus will be on consistent sheet formation and safe, effective beater use, empowering participants with a solid grounding in materials and techniques for future independent papermaking in MCBA’s Papermaking Labs.
Harvest Your Own Paper
Saturday Sept. 21, 2024 10-4 at Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Fall is the time of abundance for papermakers. This workshop will focus on harvesting and preparing plants from the garden to make unique and beautiful papers. Grasses, leaves, stalks, and bast can be used cooked or raw, beaten by hand, beaten by machine, combined with other plants, and more. Let’s see how many different results can be achieved by trying as many options as time permits. Bring plenty of plant material for experimentation. Hostas, daylily leaves, grasses, straw, cattail, yarrow, milkweed stalks and seed fibers, corn husks, hollyhocks are all plants that make great paper. In addition to plants, please bring a cutting board, chopping knife, pruners or other cutting tools, rubber gloves, and boots or shoes that can get wet.
Japanese Style Papermaking
Saturday, June 22, 2024 10am-5pm at Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Explore the tools and techniques of Japanese papermaking in this in-person workshop. Learn fiber preparation techniques including cooking, cleaning and hand beating, sheet formation, pressing, and drying. Finished papers can be strong yet nearly translucent, and sheet size can range from 5 x 7 inches to 5 x 7 feet! Come away from the workshop with the skills needed to make Japanese paper independently during MCBA’s Papermaking Labs.

Perfect for decorating your home or giving as holiday gifts. Please bring boots or shoes that can get wet as well as sketches of inspiration for your designs.
